“NEW”S1-S6/STAFF: CHILDREN IN NEED CHARITY MATCH. To help raise funds for Children in Need, there will be 2 charity matches between seniors and staff. On Thursday there will be a Netball Match will Female Teachers and S6 Girls in the bus park 12.50 pm and on Friday there will be a Football Match between Male Teachers and S6 Boys on the 3G 12.50 K.O. A good turnout would be appreciated with generous donations to support Pudsey and Children in Need. Of course, all this is weather dependant! – Ms Biagioni on behalf of Charities Committee
S1-6: NETBALL. Game against Douglas Ewart High School will be on Tuesday 17th November from 3.30pm. Game against Dalbeattie High School will be on Monday 23rd November from 3.30pm. Team lists are on extra-curricular notice boards outside PE Base. Let Miss Dalrymple know ASAP if you are unable to play.

S1-3: SCIENCE CLUB. Cancelled this week due to staff meeting but will return next week. If you have an experiment you would like to carry out speak to Mr Cameron before Friday 13th and we may experiment on the 19th November. – Mr Cameron

S1-4: RUGBY. Training will take place on Wednesday’s after school (outdoors) from 3.30 until 4.45. Please meet in the Outdoor Changing Rooms. New members welcome.
S1-5: We are now recruiting for POLICE SCOTLAND YOUTH VOLUNTEERS in Stranraer Academy catchment area. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain more skills and qualifications whilst having fun doing so. Our group began the adventure in May this year and we have already received regional and national recognition for the fantastic work our team has been involved in. This opportunity is open to everyone aged 13-15 years old. If you applied before and were unsuccessful, please submit a new application. Should you require any further information then please speak to PC Boyce or any of the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers within the school.

S3: BRONZE DUKE OF EDINBURGH. Any pupil who has not yet collected a form for signing up for Bronze Duke of Edinburgh must collect one by this Friday (please come during registration time to collect forms). Forms and money are due in Friday 13th November (again please bring forms and money during registration time) – Miss Goulden.

*NEW* S5-6: MONSTERBALL. The Monsterball will take place on Thursday 29th October. Tickets will be on sale this week on Wednesday and Thursday (28th-29th) October at break and lunch outside Miss Martin’s room (ST3). Tickets will cost £5. NO TICKETS WILL BE SOLD ON THE NIGHT OF THE EVENT.

S6: MONSTERBALL.  Miss Goulden requires an urgent meeting with those pupils involved in organising the Monsterball. All pupils need to attend Wednesday break time prompt (excluding 2 pupils who will be selling tickets) in Miss Goulden’s Room.

S1-6/Staff: AMNESTEA COFFEE MORNING. On Wednesday the 4th November at break time in the street there will be coffee and cakes on offer. £2 for staff includes a drink and cake, for pupils this is £1.  – Amnesty International

S1-6: Residents in REPHAD CRESCENT have been in contact with me regarding students congregating in the lane particularly during lunchtimes.  The complaint is smoking, dropping litter, breaking bottles, foul language.  This lane is narrow and borders resident’s gardens.  I have contacted the Community Safety Team who have the power to issue fixed penalty tickets for littering.  I will also carry out regular patrols.  There is no reason to be in the lane other than walking from A to B.  Your cooperation on this matter would be appreciated. – PC Boyce

S5/6: ANNIVERSARY PROJECT SIGN-UP. There is now a stations sign-up sheet on Miss Moffat’s classroom door for all who have volunteered to help with this year’s 100th Anniversary project. Please sign up for one station only. If you have not previously given me you name see me first.

S5/6: ANNIVERSARY PROJECT MEETING. There will be a meeting Thursday lunch time at 1pm for all pupils who have volunteered to help with the 100th Anniversary project. This is compulsory- you will find out the activities for each station in more depth.

S1-6/Staff: KNITTED POPPIES FOR SALE. To fund the schools 100th Anniversary Project in Remembrance of the people who made massive sacrifices during The First World War, you will be able to buy a hand knitted poppy. Each poppy will be £2.50, this money will cover materials, money for the project and a donation to the Lady Haig Poppy appeal. They will be on sale on return from the holidays. To ensure you get one place an order with Miss Moffat before the October holidays.
S3-6: SKI TRIP PAYMENTS. Can all pupils please ensure September and October’s payments are in by the end of the week due to October holidays. If there is any reason you cannot pay by this time please see either Miss Goulden or Miss MacKenzie before Friday.

S3-6: SKI TRIP BAKE SALE. Can pupils please remember to bring all items for the bake sale to Miss MacKenzie’s kitchen at the start of the day on Friday.

S1-6: INCH ASSEMBLY CANCELLED THIS WEEK as Mrs Whalen will be out of school. Results and comparisons of Merits will be displayed on the Inch notice board this week. Well done to our new S1 who have achieved a very high number of merits since starting at the Academy and a special mention to 2JW as every pupil in the class received a merit letter home. Keep up the good work and enjoy your October holidays.

S5: ANY PUPIL WHO IS INTERESTED IN STUDYING EDUCATION, ENGINEERING, ACCOUNTANCY AND FINANCE and who would be keen to take part in a widening participation programme run by Glasgow University, please give name to Mrs Whalen asap. This programme can help support future applications to these areas of study. It involves working with tutors from the University both in school and in Glasgow.

S1-3: ACTIVE GIRLS DAY. When the following classes have PE on Thursday 8th/Friday 9th October – 1JW, 1W+, 1AI, 1DH, 2W+, 2DH, 2CD, 2PL, 2AI, 3AI, 3DH, 3CD, & 3PL – can pupils get changed in the usual changing area then can all the girls go to the queens hall and all the boys to the outside store – Boys may bring football boots for being outside. Only exception are the boys in 1DH and 1AI who will stay on swimming for the day. Any questions please come down and ask at the PE base. – Mr Munro

S1-6: DO YOU PLAY A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT? ANY INSTRUMENT! OR CAN YOU SING? The school pipe band is hoping to compete in the Scottish Schools Piping and Drumming Championships in Edinburgh in March 2016. They hope to participate in the ‘Freestyle’ event, which can include any instrument, including voice. If you would be interested in playing in this event, please come to a meeting in Mrs Gibb’s room (E5) at 1.15pm on Monday 5th October so we know what instruments to include in the orchestration of a piece.

 

S5/6: PUPIL COUNCIL. It was decided at Pupil Council this week that our S5/6 members will meet weekly, therefore there will be a meeting in the Pupil Support conference room at 9 am on Thursday. Also the next group meeting for Participative Democracy will take place in Lib 2 Friday, period 7 & 8. – Ms Biagioni

“NEW” S3/4: COLUMBA 1400. All pupils who attended the Columba 1400 introduction on Tuesday 1st September and would like to continue with the project please attend a meeting after school on Monday 7th in Miss Moffat’s room (SS2) at the end of the school day – SJ Moffat
“NEW” S1-6 NETBALL: Dumfries and Galloway secondary schools run an inter-school netball league. There are junior teams (S1-3) and senior teams (s4-6). Please let me know if you would be interested in being part of this league and representing Stranraer Academy. Stranraer Academy have never participated in this league before. Give names and positions to Miss Dalrymple in PE to register your interest. Be aware that there may have to be trials to select players for the league.
S1-6 LITERACY GROUP: Literacy group will meet in Mrs Fay’s room (GT1) on Thursday at 1pm to plan activities for Book Week Scotland. New members always welcome! – Ms Fay.
S5/6: PRIVATE STUDY CLASSES. In S5/6 the courses which have been selected by you may mean that you have a column containing a study class last period in the day. The school policy is that pupils, including those who are Christmas leavers, may choose to study in school or they may wish, with parent/carer consent, to study at home. The option of study at home is only available if the study period is the last period/class in the day. Pupils must sign out at the school office when leaving the school building. If you wish to study at home last period/class in the day would you please complete the consent form and return it to the school office. All pupils must be in school for registration and assembly as this time is used to share important information. Health and Wellbeing classes are compulsory for all pupils. – Mr Benson

S6: UCAS CONVENTION. Please make sure you have signed up for this via myworldof work website or the UCAS website. Also permission slips should be handed in to Mrs Whalen asap. FYI – tickets can be shown from a smartphone. However, if the phone has a cracked screen I would advise that the ticket is printed out. Wi-Fi is not guaranteed at the venue – so it may be quicker and easier for you to take a screenshot of your ticket on your phone.

S1-3: SCIENCE CLUB is a club where S1 – S2 pupils get to carry out science experiments that members want to carry out. Come along and give it a try, it’s fun, interesting and only costs £1 (to cover costs). It will start up again this week Thursday 3rd September. New members are welcome. Science Rm 8 3:30 – 4:30pm. – Mr Cameron

S2-3: HPV JAGS – GIRLS ONLY will take place at the following times at the assembly hall on Monday 7 September. S2 – 2AI/2DH at 10.15am, 2CD/2RM at 10.50am, 2JW/2W+ at 11.10am and 2PL/2L+ at 11.25am. S3 – 3AI/3DH at 11.40am, 3CD/3RM at 11.55am, 3JW/3W+ at 12.10pm and 3PL/3L+ at 12.25pm.

S1-6: WARNING FOR PUPILS WALKING TO AND FROM SCHOOL! I have received further complaints from motorists regarding the conduct of some of our students walking to and from school. The complaints are regarding students walking on the road and expecting drivers to stop. A student was struck earlier this year by a car and fortunately escaped serious injury. Anyone found to be putting themselves or others at risk by walking into the path of moving traffic will be dealt with robustly. This type of behaviour should not be happening with secondary school students and paints the school in a negative light. – PC Boyce
S1-6/STAFF: AILSA CRAIG CLIMB. Thank you to everybody who sponsored me on my Ailsa Craig climb last Saturday to raise some funds for Aird. The local branch of Richmond Fellowship organised it, and they have raised approximately £600 in total (exact amount will be finalised next week). I managed to raise £87 of this, so thanks very much! We plan to use the money to buy a bubble tube for the sensory room. – Ms McManus

NEWTON STEWART & MINNIGAFF TRADITIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL, 10TH & 11TH JULY.    The festival weekend is the perfect opportunity to learn a new skill and to gain knowledge and experience from some of the best traditional music players in Scotland and Ireland. This year there are workshops in mandolin, guitar, group work, fiddle, bodhrán and pipes so there’s something for everyone and if you’re under 16 then it’s completely free (booking is recommended)! There is also still the opportunity to enter the song writing competition, with 3 different age categories and the chance to win from £50 – £250!! As it stands there are still very few entries, meaning there is a higher chance of winning. The deadline for entries is 4th July. S5-6: EMA FORMS are now available in the office for those pupils born between 1 March 1996 and 28 February 2000.  If you are 16 years of age or over before 30 September 2015 you may be eligible for an EMA from 20 August (next term).  If you are 16 years of age between 1 October 2015 and 29 February 2016 you may be eligible for an EMA from January 2016.  The cut-off date for application forms received in Dumfries is 31 March 2016.

*NEW* S2, 3, 4: SPORTS DAY 2015 (ATHLETICS PENTATHLON CHAMPIONSHIPS)  will be held in athletics arena on Monday 15th June.    All pupils participating MUST report to registration teacher at start of day and then to designated changing areas: S2 Boys/Girls-Queens hall changing rooms, S3 Boys/Girls-Gym changing rooms, S4 and Senior Boys/Girls- outdoor changing rooms and senior helpers-swimming pool changing rooms. Pupils should then report to athletics arena at 9.15am for a 9.30am start.  Lunch break will be from 12.45-1.25pm, after which pupils should report back to the athletics arena for a 1.30pm start to complete the afternoon programme.  PE staff will be responsible for registering pupils participating in the afternoon.  All classes timetabled to be in the PE department on Monday 15th June will be allowed to spectate during their normal PE periods and they should report to the athletics arena and NOT to their usual changing areas in the PE department.  Staff cover will be required to help register and supervise these classes but this will be kept to a minimum. Unfortunately no other pupils will be allowed to spectate on the day. In the event of bad weather pupils participating or helping will be expected to follow their normal timetable and the programme will be re-scheduled for Tuesday 16th June, with the same arrangements as for Monday 15th June. Please check extra-curricular notice board from Wednesday 10th June, for full details of all competitors involved from each year group/house and also full list of senior pupils involved as officials. – Mr Binnie.

S5-6: BIOLOGY TRIP ON THURSDAY 11TH JUNE 2014 AT UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW FOR MICROBIOLOGY TASTER – DISEASE DETECTIVE.  National 5 S5 (one year course), Higher (S5/6) and Advanced Higher (Any Science).  Join University of Glasgow researchers for a hands-on diagnostics lab looking at infectious diseases caused by bacteria, parasites and viruses.  Pupils will explore several microbial diseases before trying to diagnose a ‘patient’ by analysing their recent medical history and by performing simple microscopic and biochemical tests on blood or stool samples taken from the patient.  – Ms Trotter.

*NEW* ATTENTION ALL S5/6 PUPILS.  University of West of Scotland Annual Enterprise Challenge will run again this year. A team of 8 pupils (boys and girls) will travel and stay at Dumfries Campus of UWS and compete against other secondary schools in Dumfries and Galloway.  Last year the brief was to attract visitors to your town at Christmas time.  Stranraer Academy’s presentation/ pictures etc. on display in the Pupil Support Corridor.  See Miss Dalrymple to put your name down ASAP.  This is an excellent opportunity and ideal to write about for college/ university applications!  (Especially if you are thinking about applying for business/ Law courses). – Miss Dalrymple

S2-6: By popular demand, we have added an additional academic Open Day on TUESDAY 23 JUNE 2015 for the following courses, which now have limited places available for the 2015/16 session:

–          HND Agriculture

–          NC Horse Care

–          NC Rural Skills

The Open Day will run on a drop-in basis between 10am and 4pm.  Tours, talks and activities are expected to take no longer than an hour and a half in total for each subject and these events will be on a loop throughout the day – attendees are welcome to come stay for one, two or all three subjects.

Attendees under the age of 16 should be accompanied by a supervising adult.  If you would like to bring a group of five or more students for any or all subjects please let us know in advance what time you would like to arrive and we will do our best to accommodate you as a group.  Alternatively, staff/parents on reconnaissance missions are welcome to attend without students!

S1-3 now (S2, S3, S4): SCHOOL ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS.  This years championships will be held on the athletics track on MONDAY 15TH JUNE.  The format, as in previous years, will be a pentathlon type event, with a team of five boys and five girls from each house/year group competing in 100m,800m,long jump, high jump,shot putt and relays.  There will be individual champions trophies awarded per year group and also the house champions trophy based on the overall points accumulated throughout the day.  Pupils selected will be allowed out of classes for the full day to participate in the event.  To help with the selection process of teams, pupils will be selected as “House Captains”.  Their responsibility will be to try and pick five boys/girls they feel would best represent their house on the day and assistance can be given from PE staff to help with this process. We hope to have “House Captains” chosen by the end of this week and they will be require to attend a short meeting to receive further details.  Hopefully with your support, we will have another worthwhile and rewarding day and most importantly good weather!! – Mr Binnie.

This year’s event will take place in the Trinity Church Hall (across from Morrison’s) on Wednesday 3rd June from 1-3pm.  Please come along and meet the staff, volunteers, service users and carers and have a chat about dementia and its effects and what support is available.  There will also be an opportunity to sign up/ express interest in free Dementia Friends Training which will be offered to staff and pupils from school. – Shona Sneddon (Dementia Advisor).

*NEW* S1-5: ROCKET BUILDING ACTIVITY. This activity is now free of charge. If you have not signed up for activities day you can build, fire and keep your own rocket for free.  Sign up with Mr Cameron asap as I need to know numbers so I can book equipment. – Mr Cameron.

*NEW* S3: BRONZE DofE. There will be no Bronze meeting this week (26th May) due to the battlefields trip. It will resume as normal the following week. – Miss Goulden.

S1-6:  CHRISTIAN AID – RHINS WALK & FUN RUN – 10km.  It is on Saturday 30th May 2015, commencing 9.30am from the Trinity Church Hall, London Road, Stranraer.  Forms and further details are available at the Office at break and lunchtimes. – Eileen Bradley.

S1-6: PLASTIC CUPS.  There will be no more cups issued at the office.  Will registration teachers please emphasise this and that pupils should always bring a bottole of water or empty bottle for refill especially if they have a PE class. – Mr Clyne.
